Westwards in Sidmouth is a beautiful Victorian brick home nestled in the prestigious Bickwell Valley, one of the area’s most sought-after locations. Our construction team was proud to deliver a seamless, three-story luxury extension and significant internal remodeling that revitalised this historic property while maintaining its timeless period charm.
The project
Culmex’s objective was to expand the home’s living space while preserving its original Victorian character. Working closely with the architect and client, we developed an elegant extension that mirrors the intricate gable and fascia detailing of the existing structure. The result? A cohesive and sophisticated addition that blends harmoniously with the original building.
The three-story extension provided an additional bedroom, an extended second-floor bedroom, and a brand-new dining area on the ground floor. During the project, we also carried out a series of internal enhancements, including structural alterations, the installation of steelwork, and a complete kitchen refit. New flooring, bifolding doors, and updated ground-floor finishes added a contemporary touch to the home while respecting its historical essence.
External features
One of the standout features of this transformation is the expertly crafted decked area, built using premium Accoya timber. Treated with resin for superior durability in the high-saline coastal environment, the decking not only enhances the visual appeal but guarantees long-lasting quality. Beneath the decking, we created a functional Undercroft with discreet storage, featuring “secret doors” designed with precision and clad in the same saline-resistant Accoya timber.
Overcoming challenges
This project wasn’t without its logistical challenges. Located far from the main road, the property required the creation of a temporary access route to transport materials efficiently. Our team constructed a hard-standing area and built a stone road leading to the site, enabling the use of a telehandler to overcome access difficulties and keeping the project on track.
Final results
Delivered in 2023, the Westwards project is a testament to our team’s ability to innovate and adapt while delivering superior craftsmanship. With its expanded living spaces, seamless Victorian detailing, and modern functionality, this home is now perfectly suited to contemporary living while maintaining its heritage charm.
